The Kotor City Music Orchestra will perform in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna as part of the 11th “World Orchestra Festival,” which will take place from July 23 to 27.
Conductor Dario Krivokapić told Radio Kotor that the orchestra will participate in both the competitive and showcase segments of the festival.
“Orchestras from all over the world are registered for the festival. The first session was held from July 10 to 13 and featured 20 orchestras. We don’t yet know how many will be joining us in the second session, but we hope it will be a large number. We look forward to making new friends, playing music together, and gaining new experiences,” said Krivokapić.
He stated that the Kotor City Music Orchestra will perform today at the festival’s opening ceremony at the Vienna City Hall, while the rehearsal for the competition will take place on July 24 at the Vienna Boys’ Choir Hall.
They will also attend masterclasses at Mozart’s House, led by professors from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and members of the festival jury, followed by a rehearsal for a special concert.
“We will also participate in UNICEF’s charity sale, where we’ll present souvenirs from Montenegro, representing Kotor and our country.
The main competition performance is on July 25, where we will perform March Dobrota by Antun Kopitović and the overture Bokelj Night by Tripo Tomas.
In addition to the competition, we will have a special concert at Strauss’s House and another workshop at Mozart’s House with jury members and university professors,” Krivokapić added.
The festival’s grand finale will take place on July 26 in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, the same hall where the Vienna Philharmonic holds its traditional New Year’s concert each January 1.
“This is the greatest success in the long history and tradition of the Kotor City Music Orchestra.
It’s a privilege for an amateur orchestra to be invited and to participate in such a prestigious festival—something even professional orchestras from our region haven’t achieved.
During the four or five days we’ll be in Vienna, we’ll be performing in the most prominent halls not only in Vienna but in all of Europe and beyond,” said Krivokapić.
He emphasized that the trip to Vienna wouldn’t have been possible without the financial support of the Municipality of Kotor, the Kotor Tourist Organization, and “Bigova Bay.”
The Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Social Affairs of the Municipality of Kotor, Tatjana Kriještorac, will be joining them in Vienna and attending all performances.
The orchestra returns from Vienna on July 27 and will perform again on August 1 and 2 at the International Summer Kotor Carnival, on August 16 at the “Muljanska Night,” and on August 23 at Bokelj Night.
“From August 28 to September 3, we’ll be traveling to Fužine and Marija Bistrica.
We established cooperation two years ago with the Bistrica orchestra, which is conducted by Robert Homen, a native of Kotor. His brother, Rudolf Homen, leads the wind orchestra in Fužine. We worked with him last year and traveled to Spain, where he also conducted his orchestra,” he said.
A concert in Šibenik is scheduled for the end of September to mark Šibenik City Day.
On November 21, they will perform for Kotor Liberation Day, followed by preparations for their traditional New Year’s concert, set for December 23.
The Kotor City Music Orchestra currently has about 40 members (a smaller group traveled to Vienna), and since September last year, they have also operated a training school for non-traditional instruments.
“We started with 14 students, and now there are about four or five remaining.
I hope we’ll get new members starting in September to strengthen our ranks, especially with non-classical instruments like baritone, tenor horn, tuba, and euphonium, which are not taught in music schools,” Krivokapić noted.
The orchestra has all the necessary instruments in good condition, although some are currently being serviced in Zagreb.
“We plan to purchase two or three more instruments by the end of the year.
With the support of the Municipality and our sponsors, we will have the funds to complete everything by year-end.
For the Vienna performance, we prepared 40 new embroidered shirts and 40 t-shirts. The only thing we still need are new hats.
The current ones date back to 2016, and we don’t have enough of them, so once we return, ordering new hats will be our top priority,” Krivokapić concluded.
